Frog facts, Species & Habitat of the Amphibians Order Anura

Frogs belong to a group of animals called amphibians scientists believe there are more than 5000 different kinds of amphibians on earth including toads newts salamanders and Sicilians frogs are found all over the world in every climate except Antarctica.

They can be found near every and anybody of freshwater but frogs cannot live in seawater they begin their lives living in water as eggs the mother frog can lay thousands of eggs at one time each egg is covered in jelly. The jelly has an awful taste which protects the eggs by repelling predators from them until they’re ready to hatch the eggs then hatch into tadpoles.

They live in the water until they grow into adult frogs tadpoles look more like fish than frogs they have long thin tails and they breathe through gills although frogs can live on land their habitats must be near water this is because they will die if their skin dries out instead of drinking water frogs soak the water into their body through their skin.

Frogs breathe through their nostrils while also absorbing half the air they need through their skin frogs are cold-blooded which means their bodies are the same temperatures that air and water around them when they are cold they lay in a Sun to warm up and when they get too hot they will go into the water to cool down scientists have found frog fossils that date back to the Jurassic period the fossils are believed to be over 140 million years old.

The Goliath frog is the largest frog in the world measuring up to 32 centimeters in length and weighing up to 7.2 pounds their eyes are about 2.5 centimeters in diameter. Frogs use their sticky muscular tongs to catch and swallow food unlike humans their tongue is not attached to the back of their mouth instead it is attached to the front of their mouth enabling the Frog to stick its tongue out much further small to medium-sized frogs eat insects such as flies, mosquitoes, moths and dragonflies.

Large frogs eat larger insects as well as grasshoppers and worms some large frogs will even eat small snakes mice baby turtles and even other smaller frogs. Most frogs would rather starve to death before eating a dead insect or animal frogs have very good eyesight their eyes bulge out from the side of their head in order for the Frog to see in nearly all directions. Frogs also have an amazing sense of hearing frogs have very powerful back legs and webbed feet that help them jump great distances as well as swim.

Frogs even use their legs to dig or burrow underground for hibernation certain. Frogs can jump up to 20 times their own body length in one single leap every single species of frog has its own special sound and it’s only the male frogs that can croak they have a small sack in their throat that fills with air and vibrates as the air is slowly released some frogs are so loud that they can be heard from over a mile away.
