Tom & Jerry
Rivalries in history are reignited when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel, however, ensuing cat-and-mouse battle threatens to destroy her career. wedding and possibly the hotel itself. Review Tom and Jerry, the movie, is the latest attempt from the Warner brothers to bring back one of their classic animated properties into the cultural conversation, of course. Last year we watched the movie which kind of uh the plan behind that was to spawn like a massive Hannah Barbera, cinematic universe thing.
Recently, we’ve had new looney tunes cartoons and, of course, in a couple of months. Time we’ve got Space Jam 2, a new legacy which is going to bring the looney tunes back to the big screen as well as whatever other characters The Warner brothers decide to kind of pepper into that massive crossover film Tom and Jerry, the movie is, of course, predominantly based on the versions of the characters that were seen in those classic theatrical shorts of the 1940s through the 1960s.
Guess which have been recently seen in the more recent television series it’s not so much as the version that you would have seen You know, in the 80s and the 90s, The characters were best friends. going on globetrotting adventures and You know talking This is back to the basics. Tom and Jerry silent characters madcap slapstick humor insane violence, as you would expect. This is a movie that essentially gears itself towards two very specific audiences, and that is both fans of the original cartoon shorts.
You know longtime fans of Tom and Jerry. and children Don’t kid yourself; this is very much a children’s film It’s very small; it’s very quaint; it’s got a lot of heart; it’s got a lot of great messages but there was a lot in here to enjoy. It’s a movie that For me personally, I know I’m not a child But I’m a Tom and Jerry fan. I’m a child. at heart, I suppose Um, for me, it’s a movie that worked. I wasn’t expecting a great deal. out of the film. Uh, this is a movie.
That’s based on a bunch of cartoon shorts where a cat and a mouse chase each other around. and smack each other with stuff and throw stuff at each other and light each other on fire, and You know, pull each other’s tails and There’s not, I mean you’re going to a movie like this, not really expecting too much that said that premise those ideas that spawned from those six or seven minute shorts It’s not really enough to sustain an entire film Uh, this goes for, I think around 100 minutes um and because of that, Tom and Jerry actually don’t get a lot of screen time.
Um, that’s the one thing I felt that really, really kind of surprised me. out of the movie is that Tom and Jerry aren’t in this as much as You would expect But again, that said, I understand why because there are limitations. to that Tom and Jerry formula, if you Look back at the film. The classic Tom and Jerry animated feature length theatrical film that was made back in like the 1990s. Tom and Jerry were talking in that film.
It’s a sore spot for a lot of long-time Tom and Jerry fans of that movie awful film because Tom and Jerry are talking while watching this movie, you kind of do understand Why did they have to make Tom and Jerry talk? to sustain an entire feature. because if you do, just have a cat and a mice chasing each other around For over an hour and a half, it doesn’t sustain the time frame, so that said this version of Tom and Jerry, it has a bunch of human characters and These are really the characters that are at the forefront of the movie.
These are the characters that drive the narrative This is really a story. about the human characters Tom and Jerry is kind of in the background, kind of informing the narrative directions of the movie This is a film. about You know a couple of wealthy socialites who are having a big wedding in New York City and the hotel Staffers have to do whatever they can. to make sure the wedding goes smoothly. I have to take care of is getting rid of this mouse Jerry, who is running a muck around the hotel.
Bringing in a cat to take care of that problem and of Of course, it goes to a number of gag sequences where Tom and Jerry chase each other around for probably five or six minutes, you know the length of a short and then it goes back to the human things there’s probably five, six, seven sequences of tom and Jerry is kind of mucking around and doing cartoon stuff and then it goes back to the human characters doing the human character things I mean, that was okay. I think it actually worked for me.
Now that said, there are so few toms and Jerry moments in here that pretty much all of them are in the trailer like all the most of the big laughs from The movie is in the trailer in all the big set pieces are in the trailer. all the big hits and punch lines they’re in the trailer but it’s enjoyable to kind of watch them. unfold Throughout this film, all of the gags sequences are pretty much ripped directly from the classic shorts, so you really are getting real traditional classic Tom and Jerry laughs in here.
There were so many shorts, you know. hundreds of Tom and Jerry shorts over the years that it’s really impossible to try and do something unique and original with These characters, as far as gag work goes I mean, there’s there again, there’s so There are many limitations to the formula. but you can’t really offer anything. original when it comes to the gag work. So the best way to do this is to, you know, rip gags. directly from those classic shorts. as not only a nod to the fans, to reintroduce.
The younger generations the kids to these classic ideas moments are really fantastic because they are so traditional, I love that they have gone. For traditional animation, here’s really vibrant, it’s punchy, and the designs look great, and the the style of the art design and the The animation of it all is really fantastic, and I love that they went with This kind of CG traditional hybrid that really kind of makes it feel modern and fresh, but also classic and throws back those classic shorts.
It really is no surprise again that the film focuses so heavily on the human characters, I understand that this might be a a sticking point for some people might be You know something that a lot of people didn’t really enjoy the movies. that it really, really focuses a lot on human beings. but I think it works again. with the limitations that you get from that Tom and Jerry formula You need to throw something in there to Make this work for a 100-minute film. Maybe the 100 minutes are a little bit long.
I feel like it does get drawn out. just a little bit at points, but there was enough in here to keep me entertained i I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed the enjoyed the story With humans, yes, it was very simple. It was very basic, I think kind of generic, but again, you have to put yourself in the position of the desired audience for this movie, which is essentially children This is a kid’s film. I mean, it’s not going to be something that is gearing itself towards adults.
I mean This is a really enjoyable family movie a very enjoyable kids film and at that, the children who were in the The film screening that I was at was loving it They were riotous, and they were laughing there. were screams; they were, you know. cheering all that kind of stuff there’s so many throws back throwbacks to the classic shorts and so Many nods and wings to the longtime fans. that it really works. for someone like me who has watched Tom and Jerry.
You know, the entire 30 years of my life and I got out of this movie exactly what I was expecting to get out of it, um, for me, it worked on that level. Conclusion and at that, I will be happily giving to and Jerry a three and a half Out of five, Tom and Jerry are simple. yet enjoyable family flick despite less than expected screen time from the star duo, which again is understandable, they absolutely deliver with great classic animation and terrific gag work.
It’s an absolute nostalgia blast for longtime fans and a crowd-pleaser for the younger audience and at that, I’m throwing it over to you.
